As a new year is about to begin, I noticed our events.xml is about 3 MB. Obviously as the years got by this is going to ballon even more. Any easy way to delete old events, say two years old or older? Maybe even a nice little ditty that could extract older dates and make a 'events2003.xml', type file at the end of each year?

We all love what you have done with plans. I hope someone gets you nice things for the holidays.

Oh, maybe changing, 'update_timestamp', and other long xml codes to shorter ones would reduce file size as well?

Thanks so much again. Very Happy

I had a utility to split the events file by date, but it was out of date. I reworked it and put it on the addons page (plans_archive.pl).

Give it a try, let me know how it works. It's pretty basic, but it should solve the immediate problem of moving old data to another file.

I'm sorry to bother you but I'm feeling a little foolish. have never gotten the archive utility to work correctly. Do I need to modify the script before I run it? if so, how? I've tried a number of things. I just wish for some simple instruction on how to pick the date where I want it divided.

When I just run the script, plans_archive.pl, I see the request for a date as text on the page but do not know how to enter it? Is the script not running correctly for me?

No problem, the instructions for the script aren't real great. It's not a cgi script - you can't run it as a web page. You'll need command-line access to the account:

1) Make a copy of your .xml files for backup
2) Make another copy of your .xml files. Place these in the main directory of Plans.
3) cd to the main directory of Plans, and run plans_archive.pl from there.

Let me know if you encounter any other problems.

I don't think I know how to do this. Everything I have learned about the internet is through the browser or my FTP program. I know there is a language and way to move around the internet without these crtuches but they have faded from my memory.

Sounds like my best bet is to backup the present events file and start a new one.

Thanks for your reply and thanks so much for Plans Calendar.

If you email me your calendars.xml and events.xml files, I'll be happy to run the process for you. Let me know what you'd like the cutoff to be for the archived events.
